Steve Klein, B. Comm., MBA

Founder + CEO

Steve Klein is one of Canada’s foremost professional marketers. He has been growing companies for over 20 years – including three of his own and dozens of others for clients. The keys to his success: his passion for lifelong learning and a highly imaginative approach to marketing and advertising.
Steve’s background as a professional marketer is rich in experience. In the fall of 1988, he left a promising 12-year career as a highly successful corporate turnaround executive, and working from his unfinished basement, started his own company – Packaging Connections – an industrial marketing and sales agency. Three weeks later, he landed his first order for over $420,000 US from Lever Brothers in Toronto. He parlayed this order into a $40 million dollar business, earning over $8 million for his clients between 1989 and 1993.

Steve has many years of experience in the manufacturing sector. He is the former Group President of Innopac, Inc., Director of Corporate Planning & Development of Lawson & Jones and Lawson Mardon Group Limited, and General Manager of Lawson Packaging Toronto and BTR Industries Canada Limited. While at Lawson & Jones, he was one of five executives who made Canadian business history by engineering the $559 million leveraged buyout of Lawson & Jones, and its parent Mardon Packaging, in August of 1985.

Steve founded MB in August 1995. His dream was to build a high-performance marketing company that made a real difference for its clients. He’s been privileged to have coached more than 160 clients since then. He’s well-known across Canada for his best-selling book Jobwise and for his two nationally syndicated radio features. During the past 20 years, he has produced thousands of ads, written copy for dozens of websites and designed hundreds of marketing plans and campaigns.

Steve holds undergraduate and graduate degrees in business administration from Queen’s University. He is considered an expert in both traditional marketing and digital advertising media. During the past five years, he has specialized in developing integrated campaigns that span both “old” and “new” media.

Erin Giakoumelos, B. Comm.

Director of Operations

Erin is the Director of Operations at MB, with over 20 years of business experience since graduating from Carleton University with a Bachelor of Commerce. Erin has extensive experience in operations management. She spent more than 15 years in the fashion industry before becoming the General Manager of the Hellenic Community of Ottawa. She is personable and professional, and adept at leading internal staff, directing external suppliers, and liaising with clients.

At MB, Erin’s role is to ensure that projects are completed on time, on budget, and to the client’s satisfaction. She creates and maintains detailed project lists that outline the entire scope of work, and she assigns key staff members to each aspect of the job.

Martin Caton, RGD

Art Director

As MB’s Studio Manager and Lead Designer, Martin is the creative leader at MB. A Registered Graphic Designer, he is a graduate of the St. Lawrence College Design program and has more than 25 years of experience in graphic design, branding, web design, advertising creative and marketing.

He leads our art studio with an experienced eye, and has produced new brands, marketing collateral and website designs for hundreds of local and international clients. Martin is also a professionally trained photographer and has worked as an Art Director for his own studio, Caton Designs. Martin has a wealth of experience in branding, design, typography, composition and art direction.

Nicoletta Michalopulos, B.A, M.A

Marketing Coordinator

As the Marketing Coordinator, Nicoletta Michalopulos is the glue that keeps the firm together.  She is fluently trilingual in English, French and Greek.

She provides administrative support to both the CEO and Director of Operations. Her professional and outgoing nature, combined with her organization has been instrumental in the firm’s success since she started in April of 2015. She is responsible for screening phone calls, managing calendars, direct correspondence with all marketing clients and coordinating meetings and events.

Prior to joining MB, Nicoletta graduated Magna Cum Laude from Carleton University’s Combined Honours in Human Rights and Law (’13). In 2016, she completed her Masters in Law and Legal Studies, with a focus on citizenship and national security, also from Carleton.

Nicoletta first met Steve in 2011 when she successfully collaborated with related committees, hospitality vendors and production management to ensure proper execution of the Hellenic Community of Ottawa’s Annual Gold Plate Dinner.  Nicoletta has worked closely with Erin Giakoumelos, MB’s Director of Operations, when Erin was the General Manager of the Hellenic Community of Ottawa (HCO).  Nicoletta was Erin’s Executive Assistant for four years and together, their events raised over $1.4 Million dollars for the University of Ottawa’s Heart Institute and the HCO.

Rebecka Cole

Graphic + Multimedia Designer

Before coming to MB, Rebecka worked as a Graphic Designer for the Green Party of Canada, designing top quality web and print materials for candidates across the country. She has a Graphic Design Diploma from Algonquin College and is a professionally trained photographer.

At MB, Rebecka ensures that your new brand, website and print materials are unique and get the attention of your target customers. She’s highly skilled in HTML, CSS and SASS, which helps her to customize websites to our clients’ exact needs.

Anooj Francis, B.Sc CS, NMWD

Website Designer + Developer

As MB’s primary web developer, Anooj ensures your website is well-built, runs smoothly and looks exactly like the product our graphic designers presented during the initial design stage.

Prior to Anooj’s career at MB, he worked as a web developer for Loud + Clear Canada, Niagara College, and as a webmaster at Nestsoft Technologies. Anooj has a Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science from the University of Calicut and a Diploma in New Media Web Design from Niagara College.

Anooj is skilled with HTML5, CSS3, PHP and much more. If our clients need changes made to their website, want to develop a mobile app, or have other technical needs, Anooj makes it happen.

Alison Curleigh, B. Comm., ACA

Controller

Alison manages the financial functions of Marketing Breakthroughs, allowing the rest of the team to focus on what they do best. She makes sure clients are billed properly and that the bottom lines are continually taken into consideration. Her expertise is in numbers and managing accounting for mid to large sized companies.

She holds a Commerce Degree majoring in Accounting and a Certificate in Accountancy from Concordia University, and is a Chartered Accountant. Before coming to MB, she worked as an auditor for PricewaterhouseCoopers and as Director of Finance at Montebello Packaging.

Chris Mustakas, MBA

Web Content + Social Media Marketing Manager

As the Manager, Web Content and Social Media, Chris Mustakas (@ChrisMBOttawa) is a digital brand storyteller. It is a craft Chris has developed over 15 years.

Chris proudly earned an Honours degree in Speech Communication from the University of Waterloo (’04), a Masters of Business Administration (MBA) and Masters of Sports and Recreation Administration (MASRA), both from the University of New Brunswick (’09). He is a published author of Op-Ed pieces and articles (The Record and UW Imprint). He has also written press releases, annual reports, web copy and social media posts for a number of organizations including the Centre for International Governance Innovation, the Ottawa Senators Hockey Club, Gladwin Self Storage and Campus Concierge Movers.

Naturally entrepreneurial, Chris has started three businesses and has over eight years of business development experience. For the Ottawa Senators Hockey Club, Chris facilitated client relationships as an Account Manager. He was instrumental in delivering proposals for advertising contracts, season ticket packages and ethnic theme nights.

Outside of work, Chris is a dad of two. He is writing a sitcom; plays hockey, golf and softball; listens to music and designs t-shirts. He enjoys live music, scotch and cigars, bold shirt and tie combinations and has an affinity for unpasteurized orange juice.

Deirdre Andrews

Manager, SEO + PPC Campaigns

As the Manager, SEO + PPC Campaigns, Deirdre Andrews brings over ten years of extensive education and experience in interactive advertising to Marketing Breakthroughs.

Deirdre holds a diploma in Business Marketing from Algonquin College (’08) and a graduate certificate in Advertising Media Management from Centennial College (’09), where she specialized in media planning and buying. She also holds digital learning certificates in Paid Search Marketing, Integrated Digital Marketing and Search Engine Optimization from the Interactive Advertising Bureau of Canada and is Google Analytics and Google AdWords certified as well.

Deirdre has managed PPC budgets for software giants like Microsoft, Adobe and Parallels, while working at Kivuto Solutions. While there, she was responsible for campaign reporting, analysis, and optimization. Before joining Marketing Breakthroughs, Deirdre was the Marketing Director for KaliAndrews Dance Company, where she was responsible for PPC advertising strategy, social media initiatives, website maintenance including search engine optimization and email campaign management.

When not immersed in strategic planning and campaigns, Deirdre is particularly interested in vintage-inspired dresses, fashion and freelance modeling. She enjoys culinary experiences that involve Riesling wine and/or Indian food and curling up with her cats to read historical fiction or the latest J.K Rowling novel.
