You’ve decided you need to hire a marketing company or advertising agency. What’s your next step?

1. Do your homework

Before you buy a car, a crib or a computer, you research, read and review. The same should be done when you are looking for a marketing agency. To get started, find out some basic information; who owns the company, what is their background, qualifications and how long have they been in business? Are they locally-owned and operated, or do they outsource their talent? What type of experience do they offer and what training and certification do they have?

Next, look at their client list. Are client reviews available and what do they say? Why not give their clients a call and ask about their experiences? 2. Do they practice what they preach?

A website says a lot about your business and when selecting a firm to help you market your business, you want to choose a partner that has a great website. Are they on social media and are their accounts updated regularly? If you are looking for an agency to help you up your marketing game, you’re going to want someone who is already doing this for themselves.

3. Does size matter?

Are you looking for a big corporate firm with many offices and lots of employees, or a smaller shop with a family-feel and personal service? Is the work done locally and are you meeting with people in town, or via teleconference. If this is something that’s important for you, make sure you find out about their location and who will be working with you.

4. What’s important to you?

Are you looking for an agency to dazzle you with creativity or keep the budget front and centre? Identifying your priorities and communicating them clearly will ensure everyone is on the same page and working towards the same goal.
